Sand Sphere
One shell, one rod and one turn cut a hemisphere of hard-packed sand out of the beach, left beside its own hole for the tide to take back.
The thinking
from the planningThe sand is carried out, turned over beside its own hole, and left as a positive and negative pair. The rod stays still while the shell turns around it, so the top of the captured sand is the untouched beach surface.
- The rod stays stillA half-round rod lies flat on the beach and the shell turns around it, so it never digs a groove.
- The lever attaches at the rimThe half turn mirrors the shell through the beach, so the rim is the only part that finishes the turn at the surface.
- The lever swaps faces halfwayAt the top of the arc I re-pin it to the other face. The swap becomes a natural pause in the performance.
