Therapy (scan)

A charcoal study of an axial brain scan: a pale shape floating in a dark field, worked by lifting light out of a toned sheet.

The approach

from the planning

The image is mostly dark, so most of the charcoal goes on the background. The brain is lifted out with a kneaded eraser as one quiet mid-tone, and the brightest points come last with an eraser pen.

  • Tone the whole sheet firstPowdered charcoal smoothed with a chamois becomes the mid-grey.
  • Lift, don't outlineWork in from the edges so the folded outline forms as I go.
  • Edge still openBlack to the paper's edge feels clinical; a ragged fade feels more like a drawing.
